App control adds richer schedules and remote changes
The Hatch Rest 2nd gen, Rest+ 2nd gen, and Nanit Sound + Light require an app and account, and each uses Wi-Fi for setup. Nanit specifies 2.4 GHz; Hatch does not state a band. All three support remote control and multi-step wake and bedtime routines. Rest+ and Nanit document day-of-week selection; Hatch does not establish that feature for Rest 2nd gen.
The Tommee Tippee Connected Sleep Trainer also requires its app, account, and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. It adds several named alarms and a nap countdown, though Tommee Tippee does not state that schedules can differ by day of week.
On-device clocks remove the account and network layer
The Light to Rise, Groclock, MELLA, and ZAZU Sam are set up from their own buttons. Their saved schedules run without a phone or internet connection because neither is part of the control path.
The tradeoff is schedule breadth. These no-app models do not document day-of-week recurrence or multi-step app-style routines. Groclock, MELLA, and Sam add nap modes, but they are activated locally.
Saved Hatch routines can play offline, editing cannot
Hatch documents Bluetooth fallback separately for Rest 2nd gen and Rest+ 2nd gen. During an internet outage, saved scheduled content can continue, but caregivers cannot create or edit routines, set a timer, or change child-lock and clock-display settings. Some Hatch+ library content may also be unavailable.
This makes an outage a control limitation rather than an automatic loss of every saved cue. Power is separate: Rest 2nd gen stops without external power, while a charged Rest+ 2nd gen can keep operating on its battery.
Choose based on who changes the routine
App control suits a household that wants to edit schedules away from the clock or assign different routines to different days. Skip Hop's Smart Snail shows a different app pattern: it uses Bluetooth rather than Wi-Fi, routine edits require a compatible iPhone or iPad within 30 feet, and it has no remote control.
On-device control suits a stable daily plan and keeps access physically tied to the room. Child locks are documented on Groclock and MELLA, as well as both Hatch models; Yogasleep does not state that Light to Rise has a child lock.
Use these questions to decide
When another caregiver needs access, check who can invite them and which controls are shared. Remote control alone does not establish permission for another account.
- Do wake times need to differ by day of week? Rest+ 2nd gen and Nanit support this; Rest 2nd gen and the no-app examples here do not have exact-model evidence for it.
- Will caregivers edit routines from outside the room? Hatch, Nanit, and Tommee Tippee Connected support remote app control.
- Must every setting remain editable during an internet outage? Choose an on-device model.
- Is a separate nap mode more important than multi-step routines? Compare Groclock's clock-time nap with MELLA's countdown.
